About Patiala Locomotive Work: PLW Patiala is a 100% owned manufacturing unit of Indian Railways, established in October 1981 as “Diesel Component Works” (DCW) to meet the ever increasing demand for high precision maintenance spare parts for ALCo diesel locomotives. Located in the heritage city of Patiala, it is the pride of Punjab. With more than 3,000 employees, the unit has more than 557 hectares of land in addition to the integrated site. Following the successful achievement of this goal in Phase I of the project, the second major mid-life overhaul (MLR) of ALCo’s locomotives was launched in Phase II in 1989-1990. During the MLR, the 2600 HP locomotives were upgraded to 3100/3300 HP locomotives, along with other retro-upgrades such as AC-DC transmission, improved fuel efficiency and shortened maintenance intervals, etc. With the change in core business, the unit was renamed “Diesel Locomotive Modernization Works” and DMW for short. In 2010-2011, DMW/Patiala started production of new ALCo locomotives to meet the requirements of the Indian Railways, in addition to fulfilling some orders from non-railway customers. To date, DMW has refurbished a total of 2,298 old ALCo locomotives and produced 327 new ALCo locomotives.
